Ōkyo was a painter who used a more realistic style of drawing than his contemporaries. He felt that the successful delineation of an object’s form must come before any attempt to reveal its spirit (which was the goal of his Chinese-influenced contemporaries). This new drawing style attracted many followers and his paintings were often reproduced in woodblock-printed art books.
